The team co-ordinates a variety of participation groups and activities for children and young people from different age groups and backgrounds to ensure that they are actively involved in our decision making processes and that their views, experiences and ideas for change are listened to and acted on by the Council and its public and voluntary sector partners. This includes key areas of statutory engagement work around Safeguarding and Special Educational Need and Disability (SEND) which contribute to Ofsted inspection readiness. This work is co-ordinated through the Children and Young People’s Participation Strategy and is accountable to the Children’s Partnership Board and Corporate Parenting Board. An action plan outlines the work to be carried out over a 12 month period.

The groups that can be utilised for engagement and participation through the team are:

Youth Cabinet,
Youth Council,
Primary Parliament,
Children in Care Council,
Special People Group and
Action for Young Carers
 Enabling Engagement

The team also ensures that citizens have opportunities to actively participate in decision making in the various strategic commissioning reviews undertaken by the Council. This may involve supporting focus groups and reference groups, helping to plan and deliver stakeholder conferences, planning survey activity and supporting citizen involvement in tendering specification, tender assessment and quality assurance. In addition to supporting engagement and participation work on strategic health and social care transformation programmes the team also provide managerial and operational support for Vulnerable Adults Plan-related engagement work including Learning Disability, Autism and Mental Health participation.

It is key that as a subject expert or project manager for a piece of work, officers undertake engagement and the team will support, enable and offer advice on the various methodologies that can be used when engaging to enable the Council to undertake the appropriate levels of engagement.
