Speech, Language and Communication Resources week 3
Year of Communication - Better communication begins at your child’s level. Learn how to make it part of everyday play.
Getting down to your child’s level helps you talk about what interests them most.
Why getting down to their level helps your child learn
It allows your child to:
• See what you are doing or looking at
• Hear your words and sentences more clearly
• Show you what they’re interested in
• Watch your facial expressions, eye movements and lips, all important clues that help communication
Everyday routines like hanging out the washing are great chances to talk together and can be fun too.
• Naming and describing the items in the basket helps build your child’s vocabulary
• Talking about who each item belongs to teaches ideas like ownership and sharing
Try to get down to your child’s level so you can talk about what interests them.
Repeat the words they say back to them clearly, even if they don’t get the pronunciation right yet.

Get down to your child's level:
In this video, you’ll see a mum crouch down beside her daughter while they hang the laundry together. By being at her child’s level, she creates an easy, natural moment for chatting and learning.
Hanging up laundry together - BBC Tiny Happy PeopleHave a look at the video below and try using the sign for LOOK together.
Adding simple signs while you chat helps your child follow your focus and makes the moment even more engaging.
Signing + singing = fun shared attention!
Using a sign like LOOK alongside a little song or rhythm can turn everyday routines into playful learning moments.
Sing Row, Row, Row Your Boat and try using the sign for LOOK.
