Faith and Binx’s Breastfeeding story

Read about how breastfeeding courses helped Faith gain the confidence she needed to breastfeed her baby.

I had a little boy 5 years ago and tried breast feeding, I was petrified, and it was painful, and I didn’t persevere. And I really regretted it and my friends who had persevered had lovely stories and talked about the perks, like the lovely bond and the fact that it is free.

This time when I fell pregnant, I was really determined to speak to as many of my friends and do as much research about breast feeding. Just to see if I could like build some confidence beforehand.

There are loads of good support contacts that my health team put me in contact with. I did some online courses and some in-person courses at our local Healthy Family venue. They were really helpful, I would recommend them to anyone. They gave a sense of community, that I was not on my own, I didn’t feel silly to ask questions we all just wanted to nourish our baby.

Because of the work I’d done it was a much more positive experience. I actually felt so much pride, I pumped enough to fill a bottle for us, it was a euphonic feeling of achievement that I wasn’t expecting to feel. I feel that breast feeding gives you a sense of pride in your body and in your baby. You are nourishing your baby with your body.

I had a lot of support. Building confidence to put her in positions that would work better for us. Position is crucial, where she puts her mouth, the way your nipples are positioned, etc. Understanding what happens when you breast feed, the pattern in which they suck and how they get that pudding milk, I didn’t have a clue about that sequence.

They really helped me with the detail and the technical side of things.  It made a world of difference to me. It built confidence in me that what I was doing was the right thing.

I’m like new woman, I’m like a breastfeeding expert.

The ones who are considering starting, do your research, but don’t put pressure on yourself, a fed baby is a happy baby.  For those giving up, preserve, it’s not a walk in the park, it’s definitely a journey but just a happy and proud journey I can’t tell you how proud I am of us.
